The 1983 image album that started Joe Hisaishi's partnership with Hayao Miyazaki, on vinyl from Studio Ghibli Records. Hisaishi composed these pieces from Miyazaki's original Nausicaä manga before the film was even made, and the music became the foundation of the film's score. The jacket features Miyazaki's own illustration of the Torumekian war, and a 4-page color insert is included. Japanese pressing, new.

  • The origin of the Nausicaä score. Written before production began, from the manga alone. Hisaishi's work here led to him scoring the film, and to nearly four decades of Ghibli soundtracks.
  • Miyazaki cover art. His Torumekian war illustration, originally drawn as a poster for Animage magazine.
  • 4-page color insert and obi strip.
  • Official Studio Ghibli Records vinyl. Catalog number TJJA-10008, from the 2018 reissue series of the early Hisaishi Ghibli albums.

About the album

Before Studio Ghibli existed, Hayao Miyazaki was turning his manga Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind into a film, and Joe Hisaishi was asked to write an "image album": music that captures a story's world and characters before any animation exists. The result, released in 1983 as Tori no Hito ("The Bird Person"), so impressed Miyazaki that Hisaishi went on to score the film itself, and later Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away. You can hear the film's main themes taking shape here, including the first versions of "Nausicaä's Theme" and "The Bird Person." The 2018 vinyl reissue launched on Japan's Record Day, November 3, alongside the Nausicaä, Castle in the Sky and Totoro soundtrack and symphony albums.
