Joe Hisaishi – Porco Rosso Soundtrack LP (First Vinyl Edition, Studio Ghibli Records, Japan Import TJJA-10023)
Joe Hisaishi's soundtrack for Hayao Miyazaki's Porco Rosso (1992), on vinyl for the first time from Studio Ghibli Records. Recorded with a roughly 70-piece orchestra and a focus on acoustic sound, it's Hisaishi's warmest, most romantic Ghibli score, full of Adriatic sunlight and 1920s Italian flavor. About the soundtrack
Porco Rosso follows a WWI flying ace, cursed with the face of a pig, who hunts air pirates over the Adriatic between the wars. Joe Hisaishi gave it a score unlike his others for Miyazaki: lush, nostalgic and European, recorded acoustically with a full orchestra of about 70 players. Swaggering marches for the sky pirates sit alongside tender themes like "Bygone Days" and "Porco e Bella," and the film's dogfights get their own big set pieces. Singer Tokiko Kato, who voices the hotel owner Gina, performs the French chanson "Le Temps des cerises" and her own song "Toki ni wa Mukashi no Hanashi o," which closes the film. In 2020, Studio Ghibli Records remastered the soundtrack and released it on vinyl for the first time, alongside the Porco Rosso image album and the Kiki's Delivery Service albums.
