The essential Nujabes, picked by the man behind Free Soul. Japanese DJ and curator Toru Hashimoto went through the Hydeout Productions catalog and chose 17 tracks that show why Nujabes still shapes jazz-rap and lo-fi hip-hop today. This is the original 2014 Japanese CD on Hydeout, imported from Japan and factory sealed.

  • 17 tracks, 80 minutes. Nujabes at his most melodic: "Feather," "Luv (Sic) Pt. 2," "Modal Soul," "Reflection Eternal" and "Ordinary Joe" with Terry Callier.
  • Official Hydeout Productions release. Catalog number HPD-16, from Nujabes' own label.
  • Japanese pressing in a digipak. Brand new and sealed.
  • Curated by Toru Hashimoto. Part of his long-running Free Soul compilation series.

About the collection

Nujabes (Jun Seba, 1974–2010) started Hydeout Productions in Tokyo in 1998. Over the next decade he worked out a style built on jazz samples, soft drums and piano and sax lines, and it reached listeners worldwide through his solo albums and the Samurai Champloo soundtrack. Many people now name his records as a starting point for lo-fi hip-hop.

Free Soul Nujabes – First Collection plays like a long, unbroken set. The emotional high points of Modal Soul sit beside the warmer cuts from Metaphorical Music and later tracks with Uyama Hiroto and haruka nakamura. It works as a first Nujabes record, and longtime fans will want the Japanese edition on the shelf.
