Willy Calderon – Stay With Me / Midnight Pretenders (feat. Aico Simon) 7" Japan Import
City pop classics, reborn as salsa. LA percussionist and producer Willy Calderon turns two of the most-loved Japanese city pop songs into full-band salsa: Miki Matsubara's "Stay With Me" and Tomoko Aran's "Midnight Pretenders," both sung by Aico Simon. Released on 7" by Think! Records in Japan. Japanese pressing, new.
- Side A: "Stay With Me." Miki Matsubara's 1979 hit (真夜中のドア) reworked as straight-ahead salsa, with a bass-driven groove and stereo cowbell.
- Side B: "Midnight Pretenders." Tomoko Aran's 1983 late-night classic, the song The Weeknd sampled for "Out of Time," given a slower, after-hours Latin feel.
- From the "City Pop Salsa" sound. Calderon's city pop and salsa fusions first caught on in Japan through the Project Neon compilation.
- Japanese 7" pressing. Think! Records, catalog number THEP-671.

About the record
Willy Calderon is a Los Angeles percussionist, multi-instrumentalist and producer who found an unlikely new audience in Japan by playing city pop in the style of classic salsa. Both songs here first appeared on the 2024 compilation Project Neon: The Birth of City Pop Salsa, and Think! Records has now paired them on 7". Both tracks feature vocalist Aico Simon. It's a natural pick for DJs who play city pop, Latin or disco sets, and for collectors of the original Matsubara and Aran records.
