Joe Hisaishi's expanded score for the US release of Castle in the Sky, on 2LP vinyl for the first time from Studio Ghibli Records. For the film's 2003 American DVD release, Hisaishi went back to his 1986 music, re-recorded it with new arrangements and added new pieces. The result is a bigger, fully orchestral version of the Laputa score, with 23 tracks across three sides. Newly remastered, in a gatefold jacket with new artwork and liner notes, with a laser-etched fourth side. Japanese pressing, new.

About the album

When Disney prepared Castle in the Sky for its English-language DVD release in 2003, Joe Hisaishi took the chance to revisit the score he had written for the film in 1986. He re-recorded it with new orchestrations and wrote new music for scenes that had little or none, turning a compact synth-and-orchestra soundtrack into a sweeping full-orchestral one. The album was released on CD in Japan in October 2002 as Castle in the Sky ~USA Version Soundtrack~, and it works best as a companion to the original rather than a replacement: the same beloved themes, from "The Girl Who Fell from the Sky" to "Memories of Gondoa," heard on a larger canvas. In 2021, Studio Ghibli Records remastered it and released it on vinyl for the first time.
