Joe Hisaishi's My Neighbor Totoro image song album, with the first recordings of "Sanpo" and "My Neighbor Totoro," on vinyl from Studio Ghibli Records. Made before the film's score, it was written around one idea: songs children would really want to sing, out loud and with their mouths wide open. Ten songs and one instrumental, sung by Azumi Inoue, Joe Hisaishi, Kumiko Mori, Taku Kitahara and the Suginami Children's Choir, plus a 16-page booklet with the melody score for every song. Japanese pressing, new.

  • Includes "Sanpo" and "My Neighbor Totoro." Both became the film's opening and closing themes, and "Sanpo," sung here by Azumi Inoue, now appears in Japanese school textbooks.
  • 16-page melody score booklet. Sheet music for every song on the album.
  • Songs for the whole world of the film. Songs about the Catbus, the soot sprites, Mei getting lost, and the "Dondoko Festival."
  • Official Studio Ghibli Records vinyl. Catalog number TJJA-10014.

About the album

For My Neighbor Totoro (1988), Joe Hisaishi and Hayao Miyazaki took a different approach from Nausicaä and Castle in the Sky. Instead of an instrumental image album, they made a collection of songs: simple, singable tunes about the film's characters and moments, written for children to sing along with. Two of them, "Sanpo" and "My Neighbor Totoro," became the film's theme songs and are now classics in Japan, taught in schools and sung by generations of kids. Hisaishi sings one track himself, "A Little Photograph." Studio Ghibli Records first reissued the album on vinyl on Japan's Record Day in November 2018, and after it sold out, pressed more copies.
